'VERSE UPDATE 2020 (2)

Aaaaaaand here we go!

Two new releases and a good mix of previously released issues, some of which are being made available to order online for the first time:

DAKILA: Siyudad Issue 1 (of 4)
David Hontiveros / Pyotr Mutuc
B&W / Wraparound cover / 24 pages / 5.5 x 8.5 inches / 100 pesos

The oikoumene is the physical plane we all live in.
But just beyond the Veil, there’s the Darkside, the diabul, where creatures from folklore and myth, entities divine and infernal, creatures undead and spectral, reside.
And Dakila’s about to enter the diabul--on Halloween, of all nights--to help young Maleck de los Santos with a personal quest.
What could go wrong?

DAKILA: Siyudad Issue 2 (of 4) [New Release]
David Hontiveros / Pyotr Mutuc
B&W / Wraparound cover / 24 pages / 6.5 x 10 inches / 160 pesos

Where Makati stands today used to be a swamp, a long time ago.
In the diabul, something’s about to rise from that swamp…
And it isn’t in a very good mood…

KADASIG: Walanghanggan Issue 1 (of 3) [New Release]
David Hontiveros / Romnick Magbanua
B&W / Colored cover / 36 pages / 6.5 x 10 inches / 230 pesos

There is a sentient horror movie, a diabolic film that constantly hungers to completely draw its audience into its narrative.
Literally.
And Kadasig is about to become its star attraction…

MASKARADO / DAKILA: Silver Like Dust
David Hontiveros / Reno Maniquis
B&W / Full color cardstock cover / 28 pages / 5.5 x 8.5 inches / 200 pesos

Maskarado: “Manila’s Masked Marvel.”
Dakila: his world’s “cosmic champion.”
These two heroes from different dimensions are about to face an enemy driven by madness and greed.
An enemy who wants all the power in the world for himself.
Including theirs.

And, for Brandon Ramirez, all the skintight spandex craziness starts here, in the 3-issue introductory arc…

DAKILA: Kapalaran

Issue 1
David Hontiveros / Bibo Reyes
B&W / Full color cover / 24 pages / 5.5 x 8.5 inches / 130 pesos

In which Dakila meets some corporate angels and the Devil…

Issue 2
David Hontiveros / Romnick Magbanua
B&W / 44 pages / 5.5 x 8.5 inches / 160 pesos

In which Dakila gets some training, we find out what’s up with his MIA mom, we discover which trusted ally is lying straight to his face, and the Devil does SPOILER!

Issue 3
David Hontiveros / Enel Lawrence Villegas
B&W / 32 pages / 6.5 x 10 inches / 190 pesos

In which we witness some cosplay, and Brandon’s official public debut as a superhero.

So there we go.

Please click on over to the Indies section of the Avenida website for more details (and preview pages), and, you know, to do the ordering…

Meanwhile, please stay safe and sane, people!

'VERSE UPDATE 2020 (1)

Story has always served to help keep my head above water, especially when the seas are particularly tempestuous (as they have been, and continue to be, in TFNY 2020).

A significant part of what got me through the nightmare of the past 8 months or so was doing my part in telling the ‘Verse Story.

can’t speak for the mighty fine artists who worked through quarantine to fill my Inbox with pages of art that managed to keep my spirits up and kept me going, but for me, working on the comics--whether it was lettering the pages that were coming in, or writing scripts--was me defiantly waving a double bird salute to all the grief and anxiety in the most creative way I knew how.

So, yes.
There are new ‘Verse issues on the way.

And, thanx to Avenida, you’ll be able to order those new issues (and some previously released ones) from your home.
Long-time ‘Verse readers will perhaps rightly guess that, in some other alternate timeline, these new issues (4 of them) would have been the new releases at good old NovKon.
As far as our world goes though, you’ll need to click on over to the Avenida website, and then have them delivered to you.
But not yet, though.
I’ll be posting again with another announcement once I get the green light from Avenida that all is ready on their end.

For now, these are the cover images for the 2 new issues releasing in Wave 1.

The other 2 new issues will be released as part of Wave 2, sometime early next year.

More details on the new releases (as well as the old issues also becoming available to order on Avenida) in the next announcement.

For now:

To the artists I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with on the ‘Verse titles:

To those who stayed radio silent throughout quarantine, I truly hope you’re all doing well.
If you happen to be reading this, please drop me a line. It would be great to hear from you;

To those who reached out, I’m glad to have heard from you, and I hope you’re continuing to stay safe (and sane);

And to those who joined me in working through TFNY 2020 (you know who you are), thanx SO much for your hard work and dedication.
These comics would not exist without you.

And to all you mighty fine folk out there, supporting these new releases won’t just be a show of support for my writing.

You’ll also be supporting Avenida, without whose order/delivery infrastructure these issues would not be available under the current circumstances.
https://www.myavenida.com/

You’ll be supporting Reno Maniquis, proprietor of Ye Olde Print Shoppe, CreativeTrio.
https://www.facebook.com/creativetriodesign/
https://www.instagram.com/creativetriodesign/?hl=en

You'll be showing your support for the local, self-publishing comics scene.

And you’ll of course, be supporting the mighty fine artists who’ve worked on these issues.

But aside from that, you’ll also be supporting Story.
And the Voices that are helping to tell that Story.

Please continue to stay safe and sane, and keep an eye out for the next announcement, once Avenida is ready to accept orders.

you can't drink just six,

Dave

SELECTED 'VERSE TITLES NOW AVAILABLE ON MERVSTORE!

So, yes, The 'Verse is now one of mervstore's new partners...

At the moment, 12 'Verse issues are part of the selections for mervstore's H Club Box 5. (Check out the link for details.)

The 12 issues currently available through mervstore are (in alphabetical order):

DAKILA: Lumilim
Issues 1 & 2
David Hontiveros / Elmer Cantada

Your name is Brandon Ramirez and you’ve been a geek your whole life: comics, movies, RPGs, cosplay.

And now you’re officially the world’s first superhero, as evidenced by the cape, the mask, the totally ripped physique, and those crazy-awesome powers.

Higher agencies seem to have conspired to steer you right into that skintight outfit.

We have only one question: How’s that working out for you?

It’s been almost 3 months since 18-year old Brandon Ramirez first became Dakila.
And right now, he just wants to cosplay.
But a day at ManilaCon with his barkada turns super weird (and super dangerous!) when creepy urban legend Mr. Alikabok--actually one of Mangilala’s many guises (dude’s a cosplayer too! Who knew?)--shows up with some, err… “friends,” to spoil everybody’s geekery.
Boooo! Hissssss!

Dakila. 18 years old. Cosmic champion.
All of a sudden, acne and getting a driver’s license are so not a big deal anymore.

DAKILA: Makadaot
Issue 2
David Hontiveros / Carl Corilla

Dakila has to face rains that are gradually sapping his strength to find a missing child.
AND his kitten!
But a bunch of saitans are about to make things a LOT more complicated...

DAKILA: Makadaot
Issue 3
David Hontiveros / Carl Corilla

Where we see exactly what Grundle... errrr, Kasuko’s “sweet itsusiak deal” was all about...
DAKILA: Metronom
Issues 2 & 3
David Hontiveros / Romnick Magbanua

There’s been an angel murder, and an attempted angel murder.
Who’s on the case?
Gil Grissom? Mac Taylor? Or (Heaven help us!) Horatio Caine?
Nuh-uh!
Dakila’s on the case!

DAKILA / KADASIG: Balat
Issues 1 to 4
David Hontiveros / Romnick Magbanua

While just trying to do the right thing, Dakila runs afoul of the Yokusuru crime family, the same bunch of drilo Kadasig also happens to be looking into.
High flying, fist to jaw, tsinelas to face action follows!

DAKILA / MASKARADO: Silver Like Dust
David Hontiveros / Reno Maniquis

Two kick-ass heroes.
One awesome team-up.

Dakila finds himself in another dimension, in another Philippines, where he meets “Manila’s Masked Marvel,” Maskarado.
Together, the heroes face an enemy driven by madness and greed.
An enemy who hungers for all the power in the world.
Including theirs.

KADASIG Volume One: "The Skeleton at the Feast"
Issue 2
David Hontiveros / Rafael Gumboc

Kadasig has served the Lady Ibu for centuries.

He was human, once. But today, he is a living, breathing kutummu, his skin now merely the scabbard for the seemingly infinite array of weapons he draws from inside himself, weapons he shapes from his own flesh and bone, to best serve the Lady in the only way he truly knows how.

He is the Lady’s kallaapu; her knight, her enforcer.
He is her beet tilli; her arsenal.
He is her kak daami; her bloodstained weapon.

And she is about to use him to finally lay her enemies low…

Kadasig's memories of his violent past are disturbed in the wake of an aswang attack on the heir to the enkanto throne...

Okay.
All the 'Verse issues available on mervstore are complete narratives.
They're either stand-alone one-and-dones (like either of the Makadaot issues), or two-parters (Lumilim 1 & 2) or story arcs (Balat) that are finished, so no need to worry about waiting for the wrap-up.

I'm currently not privy to mervstore's timetable, but the 'Verse issues (as well as all the other titles from mervstore's other new partners) will eventually be made available under regular circumstances as well.
We'll update you when that happens.

There are also other plans afoot, like getting other 'Verse issues, like the "Maskarado (Red)" cover of Silver Like Dust

onto mervstore (currently, only the "Dakila (Blue)" cover is available), as well as some other titles, and other sneaky (initially exclusive to mervstore) schemes.
Updates when those come closer to reality.

For now, check out mervstore and H Club Box 5.
You won't just be showing your support for Filipino komix in general, you'll also be showing your support for all the mighty fine artists who've collaborated with me.
AND you'll be showing your support for mervstore, who are busy carving out new avenues for greater visibility and availability of Filipino comic books...

you can’t drink just six,

Dave

And extra thanx to Reno and Mica for manning the Alamat table while I was off at the Summit booth for the book signing! Lifesavers!
And thanx to the Komikon crew as well, for yet another awesome Summer Komikon.

In case you haven't heard, The Black Bestiary: An Alejandro Pardo Compendium contains a new batch of creature entries (written by Budjette Tan), and a whole lot more narrative stuff, written by yours truly, with illustrations by Kajo Baldisimo, Bow Guerrero, and Mervin Malonzo.

Check out previews of some of the new creature entries here,* and check out the round-up post (which has some more BB-related links) here.

Let's all support the printed word, 'cause having that fresh new book in your hands, with that brand new imaginative territory just waiting to be explored... no other sensation quite like it...
Vive le livre! (Or something like that...)

you can’t drink just six,

Dave

* Just to clarify, while Kajo and Bow do have illustrations in BB, the art of the five creatures featured in the article are all by Mervin. (And, as noted on each image, all illustrations appear courtesy of Summit Books.)

2017 NOVEMBER KOMIKON RELEASES

It’s a 26 page one-shot, at P130, and it’s releasing with 2 different colored covers.

(See the complete sneak preview pack--including 2 lettered pages--at the Maskarado FBpage, here.)

In keeping with Maskarado’s 25th anniversary celebration, we’re offering the Silver Discount.

Here’s how that works:

You can opt to pick up both covers of Silver Like Dust, at P250, and that will get you a further P25 off any additional single Maskarado purchase AND any additional single Dakila purchase.
So buy both covers, and then buy another Maskarado title at P25 off, and then another Dakila title at P25 off.
(Note that the P25 off a Dakila title can also be applied to any single Dakila pack, instead of a single issue.)

And keep in mind, even if you just want one cover, if you're a Dakila fan you might know someone who's a Maskarado fan (or the other way around).
If that's the case, then you two/too can team up and avail of the offer.
Just look for us at the Capsule / Alamat table at this year’s November Komikon, and ask about the Silver Discount.

Set the dates: November 11 & 12, at the Bayanihan Center on Pioneer.
#komikonph

Hope to see all you mighty fine folk at NovKon!

you can’t drink just six,

Dave
